Look, most of the time I like to write about fun, happy things like getting in shape, making money, and improving your dating skills. But, this world we live in is not all rainbows and bunny rabbits. So today I wanted to take a look at a less cheerful topic that is nonetheless important for everyone to think about and prepare for…
A recent study published in the UK listed the most likely scenarios that would result in the extinction of the human race. It’s an eye-opening study that reveals how likely a dooms-day scenario actually is. What seemed like science fiction a few short years ago is increasingly becoming a reality with a very real possibility of happening in the near future.
I’ve done a fair amount of research into this issue and the results are staggering and quite frankly a little frightening. Let’s run down some of the possibilities that could pose the greatest threats to America and could very well spell the end of civilization…
1. Global Pandemic:
The likelihood of a global pandemic is increasingly on the rise. In 1918 influenza (the flu) killed somewhere between twenty and forty million people worldwide. This is a staggering statistic when you think about the fact that this was before air travel. Today with the ease in which people can travel the world, the threat of an even greater pandemic is that much higher. Such a pandemic could lead to the deaths of hundreds of millions of people. A few factors need to come together for such a pandemic.
First, an airborne virus would be required to make such a virus easily transmissible. Second, an incubation period of 7-14 days would be required because it would allow the virus to travel undetected. And third, a high mortality rate. Scientists it’s not a matter of IF such a virus occurs, but WHEN. And scientists now believe that a global pandemic is a very real possibility in the near future.
The recent Ebola epidemic confirms that medical treatment centers are ill equipped to handle such a scenario. Indeed, it could lead to a complete breakdown of society and law and order. The scariest part of this scenario is not necessarily what the virus would do to the human body, but what people would do to each other with the breakdown of law and order.
2. Artificial Intelligence:
Most of us have seen the movie, Terminator. The basic plot is that computers have taken over the world and create killer machines to hunt down and kill the human race. This may seem far fetched science fiction, but scientists now believe the rise of AI may the be greatest threat to mankind.
In fact, Stephen Hawking, the world-renowned British theoretical physicist has argued that it’s only a matter of time before AI becomes self-aware and decides that the world has no use for the human race. This is a frightening but very real possibility in the near future. Computers are being developed at such a pace that in the span of a few short years, AI could reach a point of self-awareness where they recognize human beings as a threat to their existence. One can only imagine what the next logical conclusion would be of such a realization. After all, AI would see self-preservation as an imperative above all else. The results could be truly frightening for mankind.
3. Nuclear War and Bio-terrorist Attacks:
Although the Soviet Union no longer exists, that by no way means there is no longer a threat of nuclear attack against the United States. Quite the contrary, there is a very real possibility that the United States will come under nuclear attack in our lifetimes. When you add to that the possibility of a bio-terrorist attack, the likelihood of a doomsday scenario in the U.S. becomes an increasingly likely possibility.
When you think about how many countries are developing nuclear weapons today that are hostile to the United States, it’s enough to keep you awake at night. Iran is only a few years away from developing nuclear weapons capability. North Korea already has nuclear capability and many intelligence agencies project it is already capable of launching a nuclear strike against the west coast of the United States.
Finally, with the rise of well funded terrorist groups such as ISIS, the likelihood of an extremist bringing a bio-weapon into the U.S. is very real. The aftermath of such attacks, even if the attack is limited to a few urban centers, could be catastrophic. Mass riots, looting, and mass casualties overwhelming hospitals, could all lead to a complete breakdown of society.
4. Super Volcano:
This one may seem far fetched, but scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey have been studying the very real possibility that a super volcano could erupt in the U.S. in the near future. A super volcano is thousands of times more powerful than a regular volcano.
In fact, scientists have discovered that Yellowstone Park is actually sitting atop a super volcano. Underneath the park is a five mile deep chamber of magma that rises and falls occasionally. It has been known to have erupted in the past, the last eruption is known to have occurred some 70,000 years ago. Some believe it’s long overdue for another eruption. What would happen if the super volcano under Yellowstone erupted?
Well, it would thousands of times more powerful than the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington back in 1980. It would be the complete destruction of the U.S. as a nation as we know it. It would spew ash for thousands of miles across the U.S., damaging buildings and crops in all directions. The destruction would be across the entire continent of the U.S. The economic damage alone would be catastrophic. The ash could block out the sun for months, destroying crop yields and leading to a prolonged mini ice age. The lives lost could be in the millions.
Yikes! These are all frightening scenarios.
With these terrible events looming on the horizon and the very possibility that they could occur in the near future, what is someone to do? My advice would be the only thing one can do is to prepare for the worst. That means taking steps to protect you and your loved ones and being prepared in the event of such a catastrophe. Stock up on foods and canned goods, and prepare an emergency shelter, and a self-defense strategy. Unfortunately, the biggest threat to life isn’t the actual attack or disaster itself, it’s from other people when society breaks down. So, in the end, it’s best to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
