If you are somebody who has been interested in making money online, you may have heard that “internet marketing” is where it’s at…
Sure, there are other ways to earn a few bucks on the internet… Some people like working for others, so they sell their time providing services on sites like Odesk. Other people make a buck or two (literally) taking surveys, which definitely doesn’t take much ambition or intelligence… And then there are those who spend their time trading stocks, or trading currencies in the Forex market…
But, unless you actually understand how stock and currency trading works, my recommendation would be to forget that othe stuff and become an internet marketer!
So What Exactly Is Internet Marketing And How Does It Work?
Basically, internet marketers sell stuff over the internet. Pretty simple concept…
As you may know, most people in the USA, Europe, and all off the other more developed countries all have Internet access these days. And even some people in poor, struggling nations have computers and smart phones that they can use to browse the Internet. AND – all those people buy stuff, lots of stuff, and a lot of that buying happens online. So as an internet marketer, you are basically just trying to get some of those people to buy from you.
Of course there are a lot of ways to do this, and I can’t even begin to cover everything that you need to know about internet marketing in one blog post, so lets just look at the two most basic ways that you can be an internet marketer or “IMer”…
Internet Marketing Method #1 – Become a “Product Vendor”: being a product vendor is kind of like running a traditional brick and mortar business. Basically what you do is start a company that sells a specific product or line of products, and then you advertise those products online. This is the more complicated of the two types of online marketing that I am going to be discussing, because it requires you to take on a number of different rather complex tasks.
In order to be a successful product vendor you need to develop a product that people actually want to buy. Of course you can create a digital “information product” like some ebook, or video training course, which makes things easier because then you don’t need to actually physically deliver the product… So that makes things a bit easier. And, you could even hire one of those people on Odesk like I mentioned earlier, and get them to do the bulk of the product creation for you. The most important part is that you do market research and find out what the market actually wants before you decide what you are going to sell to them. I can’t tell you how many people think up some product that they think is “so amazing”, and then after they have invested tons of time, money and energy developing said product they are disappointed to find out that there is nobody looking to buy what they are selling!
Anyhow – being a product vendor also requires you to create (or outsource) the marketing materials needed to sell your product effectively, and you need to figure out effective ways to get web traffic to your website so that people will actually see your marketing materials and then buy your product… And if that wasn’t enough, you also need to set up an online “sales process” that processes the transaction, and delivers the product digitally.
Becoming a product vendor is a lot of work. There are no two bits about it.
However, having your own product(s) and sales funnel is a great way to earn a living, and get this – the most successful digital product vendors make mind boggling 8 figures per year incomes! So if you are somebody who has the determination to succeeed on this level then by all means, go for it!
There are a number of courses online that can teach you how to become successful as a vendor, my pick is Mark Ling’s New Learn Build Earn Program, it’s being released later this month.
Internet Marketing Method #2 – Become An Affiliate: Becoming an affiliate is MUCH easier than becoming a product vendor because you don’t need to worry about product creation, writing salespages/sales videos, setting up shopping carts or really even doing any in-depth market research. Instead, as an affiliate your only real concern is learning how to get traffic to send to affiliate offers.
Just to make sure that you understand the concept, an affiliate marketer is somebody who sends traffic to a product vendor’s salespage using special tracking links. When a person you sent to a vendor’s webpage makes a purchase, you are credited with the sale and receive a predetermined commission for referring the sale. Sweet! And these commissions can be quite large, I’ve earned $1,200 commission before for a single sale, and really any affiliate who has been doing this for a few years and is making under 100k a year is considered kind of a dumb-ass.
So, the question becomes – how do you get that traffic to send to these affiliate offers?
Again, this is a very humongous question that I cannot adequately answer in a blog post, but the basics are as follows, you can either buy traffic from advertising networks like Facebook, Bing, Youtube, or any one of the many companies referred to as “native advertising platforms”… Or you can try to scrounge up some traffic for free using a website or posting on social media properties like Facebook, Youtube, etc… that allow you to post content. I should note that you certainly do not need to start paying for traffic when you are just starting out, as there is a ton of free traffic out there to be had.
There are tons of different strategies out there for getting traffic, however just searching for methods online is really a terrible idea. The people in forums who talk about traffic NEVER have any idea what they are talking about. Trust me, if they did they would out there making money rather than sharing their “techniques” on a public forum!
If you decide to get into affiliate marketing, the best thing that you can do is to start building a list of subscribers so that you are actually building an asset that you own. When you have your own list, it will get to the point where you can simply mail out affiliate offers and get paid every time that you send an email. How sweet is that!
And, building a list is also a great idea because if you ever decide that you want to try out being a product vendor sometime in the future you’ll already have an audience who you can sell your products too and keep 100% of the profits.
My recommendation – if you want to get started with internet marketing, the best thing to do is to become an affiliate and start building a list. Once you have a little list going you can send them daily emails and make some steady money, then, you can start experimenting with more ways to get traffic to build your list bigger and bigger until you are making the big bucks!
