If you are like many busy people then you may find yourself going without a full nights sleep on a regular basis.
As Americans work longer hours many of us stay up past midnight simply to decompress after work, only to be awakened a few short hours later to do the whole thing over again.
This can become a vicious cycle, that has some pretty serious negative side-effects!
So, as something of a public service announcement I wanted to share 5 of the most convincing reasons I’ve found for getting a full nights sleep.
Hopefully this will be enough to convince you to make an effort to getting the sleep you need all week long…
As an aside – a friend recently mentioned to me that President Donald Trump reportedly only sleeps 3 hours per night. This seemed like a shockingly small amount of sleep, particularly for a man with so much responsibility. However, as it turns out there is a small percentage (apparently around 1%) of the population who scientist refer to as “short sleepers” who truly only need 4-6 hours of sleep per night to function optimally. The rest of us however need 7-9 hours per night on average.
Why You Need 7-9 Hours Of Sleep Each Night:
Reason To Get Enough Sleep #1 – Boosts Immunity
A great deal of research has shown that not getting enough sleep is detrimental to your immune system. This means that if you are regularly going without sleep then you are opening yourself up to potentially getting sick with colds, flus and infections more often. Chronic lack of sleep could even conceivably increase your chances of coming down with a more serious disease because your immune system isn’t strong enough to nip it in the bud. That’s scary and definitely a good reason to get the sleep your body needs.
Reason To Get Enough Sleep #2 – Improved Mood
This one is pretty straight forward… Most people have serious problems handling stressful situations when they are over tired and can end up overreacting, freaking out over minor things and basically just not behaving like the best versions of themselves when they are overtired. This can lead to fights with your significant other, road rage, and clearly won’t win you any friends.
Reason To Get Enough Sleep #3 – Improved Sex Life
Not getting enough sleep can lead to a decreased frequency of intimate moments with your spouse because you may just not be feeling up to it. And if you’re single, then showing up for dates when you are over-tired and lacking in enthusiasm isn’t going to score you any points either.
This being said, lack of sleep can be a particularly serious issue for men because it can lead to a serious drop in testosterone levels – even in otherwise healthy young men Low test levels are known to cause a variety of unpleasant problems for men, so consider yourself warned! If you are a man interesting in raising test levels naturally check out this TestMax Nutrition plan I just reviewed.
Reason To Get Enough Sleep #4 – Clearer Thinking And Improved Work Performance
Simply put – your brain just doesn’t function optimally when you are not fully rested. I read somewhere that it actually temporarily lowers your IQ, and there have been numerous studies showing that people have more accidents and make more mistakes on the job when they are overtired. So if you like thinking clearly and want to succeed at work, then getting enough sleep is definitely a worthwhile investment of your time.
Reason To Get Enough Sleep #5 – Weight Loss And Muscle Development
Got a few extra pounds you’d like to lose? Maybe more than just a few? Hey, it happens!
While the connection between not getting enough sleep and not being able to get in shape is fairly well known, the specific scientific reasons for this phenomenon are not something most people know about.
The basic idea is that not getting enough sleep has a negative effect on your metabolism and hormone levels.
It’s during sleep that your body secretes the majority of the Human growth Hormone (HGH) and testosterone that it produces into your blood stream, and it is also during sleep that your muscles repair themselves and grow (assuming you are working out).
So as you can imagine – not getting enough sleep means that your body isn’t getting a chance to rebuild itself and you are throwing your hormones all out of whack.
